More than 67 million journeys have been made on the Night Tube since overnight services first launched on the London Underground in August 2016.

More than 50,000 journeys were made on the opening night of Night Tube services on the Central and Victoria lines on 19 August 2016.

The Jubilee line joined the network in October that year, followed by the Northern line in November and the Piccadilly line in December. Overnight London Overground services were later introduced in 2017.

Night services now run on Friday and Saturday nights on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, as well as the London Overground Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and New Cross Gate.

Transport for London says demand for the service has continued to grow since the pandemic, with more than 81,000 Night Tube journeys now made on an average night. Saturday nights are typically busier than Fridays.

Major events can push passenger numbers significantly higher.

Around 170,000 Night Tube journeys were estimated on the night of 11 July, when England beat Norway after extra time in the Men’s Fifa World Cup quarter-final. TfL said it was one of the busiest nights recorded outside New Year’s Eve and more than double the number expected on a typical Saturday.

Halloween in 2025 also saw around 123,000 journeys made after it fell on a Friday night – more than twice the normal number for a Friday.

TfL says the Night Tube has cut average overnight journey times by around 20 minutes, while some journeys are more than an hour quicker than before the service was introduced.

The service also provides overnight transport for many of the estimated 1.3 million people who work at night in London, including those employed in healthcare, hospitality, transport, culture and entertainment. London’s night-time economy is estimated to contribute more than £139 billion to the capital each year.

Sarah Walker, Women’s Night Safety Charter Project Manager for the Safer Business Network, said the Night Tube had helped women feel safer and more confident when travelling across London at night.

She said it provides “greater choice, reassurance and connectivity, helping people to get home safely while supporting a more inclusive and welcoming night-time economy.”

Night Tube services were suspended across the network in March 2020 during the Covid pandemic, before being restored in stages from November 2021.

To mark the tenth anniversary, TfL has also unveiled a commemorative Night Tube poster and announced a series of competitions linked to London’s night-time venues.
