Transport for London has introduced new updates to its free travel app, TfL Go App, aiming to make travel across the capital more straightforward for millions of passengers. Since its launch in 2020, the app has been downloaded over 12 million times and now attracts around 1.4 million active users every month.
The latest features allow contactless pay as you go customers to track when they have reached their daily or weekly fare cap directly within the app. This update provides clearer visibility for users, helping them understand and maximise the benefits of fare capping on the network. In addition, app users can now opt in to get insights into which maximum daily cap might apply to their typical journeys, allowing them to plan and save even more on daily travel.

“We are always looking to improve our free TfL Go app and these latest improvements aim to make it easier for people to see when they have reached the daily or weekly cap. Adding these new features, such as personalisation to its search functionality and making capping information easier to see, will help people plan journeys to their friends, family and other places of interest across London more easily.”
Emma Strain, Customer Director at TfL
Improvements have also been made for iPhone and iPad users, who can now search for nearby bus stops by location, save personalised favourites, and track live bus arrivals in real time. This means passengers can quickly find the nearest stop, see exactly when their next bus is due, and keep track of their favourite spots for future journeys. These features are expected to be available to Android users in the coming months, ensuring all users will benefit from a consistent experience.

The app continues to expand its accessibility features, including enhanced support for screen readers and improved visual contrast. TfL Go also assists passengers in planning routes across Tube, bus, tram, Overground, and the Elizabeth line, while providing information about alternative travel options and station facilities such as toilets and step free access. These improvements are designed to ensure that the app remains easy to use for everyone, including those with additional accessibility needs.
Upcoming Updates for TfL Go App Users
Upcoming updates will enable concessionary card holders including students, apprentices, care leavers, and those over 60 to view their journey history and manage their cards. This is set to provide added convenience for many regular passengers who rely on discounted travel across the city. Passengers will soon be able to add credit and see their photocard alongside any other cards used for travel, all within the TfL Go App.
Last year, TfL Go introduced features allowing users to check live bus arrivals anywhere in London and receive real time notifications about disruptions on their selected Tube, Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground or Tram routes. According to TfL, the ongoing development of the app reflects its commitment to providing accurate and accessible information for all Londoners, as well as supporting smarter, more efficient journeys across the network.
Downloading and Using TfL Go App
TfL Go can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android devices. While some new features are currently only available on iOS, further updates are planned to ensure parity between platforms. Meanwhile, Android users can continue to access live bus tracking via Google Maps if needed.
As more users turn to digital solutions for journey planning, the TfL Go App stands out for its focus on real time data and official information direct from the source. The app’s popularity has grown alongside TfL’s efforts to respond to user feedback and deliver regular improvements. With new features and a focus on accessibility, TfL Go is expected to play an increasingly central role in helping passengers navigate London’s complex transport network.
As the city prepares for a busy period of upgrades and events this summer, TfL Go’s enhancements are designed to provide greater reassurance and control for travellers across the capital. Whether you are a first time visitor or a daily commuter, the latest version of TfL Go is making it easier than ever to get around London with confidence.
