Four passengers were on board as the route 232 reportedly rolled for around a third of a mile before being brought to a halt outside Primark.
A passenger helped bring a London bus to a halt after the bus brakes reportedly failed, sending it crashing into a bin and lamppost in Wood Green.
The route 232 was travelling past Wood Green bus garage on Monday when the driver apparently became unable to stop the vehicle.
One of four passengers on board told London Bus Forums News that the driver warned them the brakes had failed as the bus continued rolling through Wood Green.
As the bus continued moving, one of the passengers pressed an emergency door control, the eyewitness said.
The passenger said the bus came to a stop shortly afterwards.
No injuries were reported.
Pictures from the scene show the front nearside corner of the bus badly damaged, with bodywork torn away around one of its lights.

Pictures taken afterwards also show several plastic wheel-nut indicators around one of the wheels appearing distorted and melted.

It is not known whether this was connected to the reported brake failure. The cause of the incident has not yet been established.
The driver involved is understood to have been suspended pending an investigation.
Go-Ahead London said TfL had been notified and confirmed the incident was being investigated.
A Go-Ahead London spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our buses travelling on route 232 on Monday 24 August. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
“Initial findings suggest it was an isolated occurrence however, we are fully investigating the incident and will take any necessary action following the conclusion of our investigation.”
Transport for London has also been approached for comment.
If the brakes fail its not the drivers fault so he legally shouls not of been suspended, he cant magically make brakes fail, shame on you TFL and Go-Ahead hope he sues you.
