The one-hour fare was introduced in September 2016 and later expanded to allow unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour

London’s Hopper fare has marked its 10th anniversary, with more than 1.43 billion bus and tram journeys made using the scheme since it was introduced.

The fare launched on 12 September 2016, allowing passengers using Oyster or contactless to change onto another bus or tram without paying again if the second journey began within an hour.

It was expanded in January 2018 to allow unlimited bus and tram journeys within the hour.

Transport for London said more than 100 million “hops” were made during the scheme’s first year.

The Hopper also applies to a number of discounted fares, including those available through the Bus & Tram Discount Photocard, Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card and Care Leavers Oyster Photocard.

A single adult bus or tram fare currently costs £1.75.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “Ten years ago, I introduced the Hopper fare to make travelling around London by bus simpler, more affordable and fairer.”

A separate Weekend Hopper was also introduced this summer, allowing unlimited bus and tram journeys for the price of a single fare on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays during the offer period.

TfL said 6.8 million customers used the promotion across eight weekends, saving passengers an estimated £15 million.

Lorna Murphy, TfL’s Director of Buses, said the Hopper had helped make journeys more affordable while encouraging greater use of buses and trams.

The Hopper fare remains automatically applied when passengers use pay as you go Oyster or contactless and make qualifying bus or tram journeys within an hour.
