Stansted Airport contactless payments will be introduced from 14 December, making train travel simpler and quicker for thousands of passengers each day. With Stansted Airport contactless payments, travellers can use their bank cards or phones to tap in and out at Stansted and 50 other stations across south east England, removing the need for paper tickets and eliminating confusion at ticket barriers.
This major upgrade, supported by an £18.7 million government investment, puts Stansted Airport in line with other London airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick, which already offer contactless payments. Officials say Stansted Airport contactless payments will benefit commuters, families, and international visitors, especially during busy times like Christmas.
For regular traveller Hannah Davies, the change is welcome. “Whenever my flight landed late, rushing to find a ticket machine was the last thing I needed,” she said. “Now with Stansted Airport contactless payments I can just tap my card and go, which is a huge relief.”
Previously, passengers risked strict penalties if they did not buy the correct ticket for the Stansted Express or failed to purchase ahead of time. Stansted Airport contactless payments will now charge the lowest fare automatically, helping users avoid costly mistakes and long queues at machines.
The expansion covers key towns including Ashtead, Dorking, East Grinstead, Aylesbury, and Baldock, making it easier for people in these areas to access London and Stansted. Support will be available at stations during the launch, and most major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay will be accepted with the new system.
Officials at the Department for Transport say Stansted Airport contactless payments are part of a wider plan to modernise UK travel and encourage more people to use public transport. Easier access by train is expected to support the airport’s continued growth as it handled more than 28 million passengers in 2023 alone.
The government anticipates that the contactless system could expand further in the future, connecting even more communities. Passengers are reminded to check their payment cards before travelling and to prepare for the new experience, which arrives just in time for the holidays.
